National increase in vaccine-preventable diseases
Cases of vaccine-preventable diseases like whooping cough (pertussis) and measles (rubeola) are rising nationally. Whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory illness, is being reported both nationally and locally, with symptoms that can persist for weeks or months. Although no measles cases have been reported in North Carolina as of late March 2025, public health officials are urging vigilance due to the virus’s extreme contagiousness. Both diseases are preventable through vaccination, with North Carolina’s vaccination rates for kindergartners exceeding 93% for the 2023–24 school year.

Safe Firearm Storage
The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is committed to distributing gun locks to gun owners in Wake County to promote safe firearm storage and prevent gun accidents, theft, and misuse. Using a gun lock is easy. Simply remove the loose end of the cable from the padlock and thread it through your unloaded firearm as shown on the included instruction sheet. With the key turned to the farthest clockwise position, insert the loose end of the cable into the padlock. Then turn the key counterclockwise and remove the key. Check that the cable is secure. Your gun is now locked and safe. Make sure you store your key and ammunition someplace away from the gun.
