Location: 5th Grade Stairwell (near bus loop)
Every year our 5th graders create a Legacy Project to leave at Laurel Park to commemorate their time at the school. Previous projects include the large metal penguin, the metal circle sculpture, dragonflies weavings in the cafeteria, fabric banners and mosaic penguins in the entranceway, circle fabric weaving in the library, and two outside murals. This year, artist Loren Pease is returning to LPES on September 7 and 8 to paint an amazing mural project with our 5th graders! Students will paint 2 separate walls in the stairwell that leads from the bus loop to the 5th grade classes. Every 5th grader will work with Ms. Pease and Ms. Benner to create a fun, welcoming space! The legacy project is funded by the LPES PTA. Thank you to families who have supported the PTA through fundraising efforts to make this and other cultural arts programs possible!

LPES PTA is thrilled to welcome Raleigh Little Theatre’s workshop entitled “Stories Alive for All!” Students will participate in theater exercises and create a dramatic story using the tools of an actor including body, voice, and imagination. The session begins with warm up exercises to explore characterization through movement and vocal expression. Then students activate a story by embodying the characters, interacting with one another, and the teaching artist within the imagined world of that story. This workshop will be designed to meet the specific learning needs of the students in the PreK class! Cultural arts workshops are funded by the LPES PTA. Warm up exercises invite students to explore characterization through movement and vocal expression, working together as an ensemble, and stretching the imagination. Students will then activate a story by embodying the characters, interacting with one another, and the teaching artist within the imagined world of the story. Program Title: American Indian History through Pottery and Art
Date(s): February 14 (tracks 1 and 2) and February 15 (tracks 3 and 4)
LPES PTA is excited to sponsor teaching artist Senora Lynch and her workshop entitled “American Indian History through Pottery and Art” for each third grade class. Ms. Lynch is a member of the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe of North Carolina. During this workshop she will talk about her art and explain how she records oral history into visual art. She will bring pottery, instruments, furs, a pump drill, baskets, and clothing for students to see and ask questions about. At the same time, she will expose students to art work, legends, stories, and traditions of her people. Cultural arts workshops are funded by the LPES PTA. Program Title: Wild Words and Free Verse
Date(s): November 20 and December 18
LPES PTA is excited to welcome poetry teaching artist Michael Beadle to work with our fourth grade classes! In the workshops, “Wild Words and Free Verse” students will learn creative approaches and techniques for brainstorming, writing and editing poems. Starting with word games, students will explore word-mixing as a way to create new and original ideas. Students will also learn how to compose their own poems by studying the techniques in sample poems. Cultural arts workshops are funded by the LPES PTA. Program Title: Jungle Tales

LPES PTA is excited to welcome teaching artist Antonio Rocha and his workshop “Jungle Tales”! In this hands on, fun, educational journey, fifth grade students will learn about the Amazon Rain Forest, including its amazing animals, food, fauna, and flora. Students will participate in the retelling of Folk Tales from Brazil and Africa. Students will learn about the diversity of the Rain Forest habitat as well as core values of conservation, getting along, respect and perseverance against all odds. Teaching Artist: Dancing Drum
Program Title: Drumming Up Character (kindergarten) and Drumming Up World Music (1st-5th grades)
Date(s): January 24 (tracks 1 and 3) and January 25 (tracks 2 and 4)
Dancing Drum’s Interactive Performance Assemblies are high-energy programs that engage, entertain and inspire! Kindergarten students will participate in the “Drumming Up Character” assembly program, which will enrich our school’s character education initiative through rhythm, song, and dance! This high energy, interactive assembly engages students through hip drum rhythms, character rap songs, and exciting dance routines about Fairness, Caring, Responsibility and Respect. The “Drumming Up World Music” assembly program for grades 1-5 takes students on an interactive musical journey to learn about rhythms from Africa, the Caribbean, South America and the United States! All students will take turns playing 2 types of African drums, shakers and blocks as they work together to showcase these fascinating musical traditions of the world.
Students in our ECS class will be given the opportunity to join a grade level in the gym for the interactive assembly. In addition, the teaching artist will go into the ECS and PreK classes with instruments for the students to play in their classrooms.
